Led by a passion for authenticity and a deep connection to the land they call home, the Hedges Family epitomizes the modern wine estate. A blend of rich cultural upbringings and a shared love for creating beautiful wine converge at the heart of bucolic Red Mountain, fostering a true homegrown approach to farming and viticulture. Hedges Family Estate unites past and present, evolving tradition for generations to come.
The Hedges Chateau is in the middle of our vineyards in the heart of Red Mountain.
It was Tom Hedges’ contact in the produce export market that “planted the seeds” for Hedges Cellars. Tom was asked to produce a Washington State table wine for sale in Sweden. A winery was born. The first two vintages (1987 and 1988) of Hedges Cellars Cabernet-Merlot were sold exclusively in Sweden. Today, four different wines including the 1997 vintage of Cabernet-Merlot are sold in 45 states and 15 foreign countries. Hedges Cellars is being hailed as one of the country's “Great Red Meritage Producers.”
Tom Hedges led a career in International Marketing focusing on food commodities. He was employed by Castle & Cooke foods from 1976-1982 heading up offices in Buenos Aires, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Vancouver, Canada. Next, he worked for Pandol Bros., a small dutch trading company in Seattle, importing Chilean produce and exporting fruit to the Far East and India. In 1984 Tom served as President and CEO of McCain Produce Co. in New Brunswick, Canada farming potatoes for export.
Tom met his French wife, Anne-Marie, in Guadalajara, Mexico at the Autonoma University of Guadalajara in 1975. Together they have raised two children.

From an early age Anne-Marie had a sense for adventure. Growing up with stories about the second world war, tales of the French resistance and visits from a British soldier saved by her grandfather from being captured by the enemy, it is no wonder that she wanted to see the world.
After high school, she attended college in England, Germany and Mexico. It was in Mexico that she met her future husband—Tom Hedges. They were married in 1976 in Champagne, France in a 12th century church. The international challenge had begun…
Accent in hand, she adapted to new food but still loved a good coq-au-vin. She tried her beer but her taste for good wine was too strong. Her grandfather, Marcel Dupont, Chevalier du Tastevin, had made sure of that.
Tom's work in international trade resulted in 11 moves for the family in 10 years—from the west coast of the United States to the east. From the west coast of Canada to the east, from warm Arizona where son Christophe was born to exotic Buenos Aires where daughter Sarah was born. Finally in 1986 Anne-Marie and Tom settled in Washington state to start Hedges Cellars.
Anne-Marie stayed behind closed doors doing bookkeeping and sales support while Tom looked for banks and customers. The transition from Finishing School in Paris in 1976 to performing an accounting role in the States was a bit of a stretch. Anne-Marie decided to go back to school and graduated with an AA degree in accounting.
Anne marie still handles some of the vineyard accounting and numerous other administrative tasks necessary for a small business owner. She is active in various non-profit organizations in the state of Washington. Anne-Marie is also a willing ambassador for Hedges Family Estate, the Red Mountain AVA and the Washington state wine industry. Her accent is still there, her french sense of style never left, her food preference is still old world but her taste for wine is distinctly American—Hedges Red Mountain. Naturellement!

Sarah was born in Buenos Aires and spent her early years travelling the globe with her family. In 1986 her parents settled in Seattle to start Hedges Cellars. A vineyard was planted in 1990 in Eastern Washington, Red Mountain area. In the summer Sarah along with her brother Christophe, worked in the vineyard and in later years at the new winery built on that same location. Sarah’s love for the industry soon would turn into a career choice. She attended the University of San Diego and graduated with a degree in business and philosophy. She later attended UC Santa Barbara to study chemistry and at the same time worked for Santa Barbara winery managing the tasting room and helping with harvest. From 2003 to 2005 she worked for Preston Vineyards in Healdsburg, Sonoma County, doing wine production work
In 2005, she decided to move back home and start working for the family winery. She joined the winery full-time in 2006 as Assistant Winemaker and two years later had completed her certificate degree in enology from Washington State University and started the label Goedhart Family with her husband. After her uncle and mentor retired in 2015, Sarah became head winemaker.
Sarah’s love for fermentation doesn’t stop with wine. She bakes rustic breads in the wood fired oven using a starter she created with our biodynamic grapes. You can also find yogurt and sauerkraut crocks bubbling away in her kitchen. She loves to cook, garden and keeps it all in check with daily yoga. She also has a deep love for animals big and small. She lives in Richland, Washington with her husband, Brent, their sons Lucas and Trevor, their dogs Otto, Shadow and Jackson, their 4 chickens and a turtle named Cowboy. Her favorite wine is whichever wine she is drinking with good friends.

While growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Grace heard California’s call. Upon graduation, she packed her bags for San Francisco and landed her first wine gig, working in the finance department for a winery in Santa Rosa. She was quickly promoted into sales and marketing, and that’s where she found her passion. Dragging wine bags up and down San Francisco’s hilly streets was no easy task, but as she learned her trade and came to know her clients, she fell in love with the wine business.
Clamoring for more knowledge, she took a position with a South American wine company, which gave Grace her first taste of travel, a passion that has led her around the world. Thirsty for bigger case drops, she set her eyes on landing large chain account deals, and she was quickly promoted to National Account Manager. Her success led her to a new job for the third-largest French wine company in France as Director of Sales. This new environment helped hone her skills in international business. In 2019, Grace joined Hedges Family Estate as the VP of Global Sales.

Karla was born, and grew up on the beautiful West side of Washington State. She immersed herself in many sports, including basketball, golf, volleyball, and softball. While Karla was working as a secretary after school, her sister was working at the restaurant next door. Karla went to visit her sister on her lunch break and saw the hustle and bustle of the restaurant world and was hooked! She started slinging cocktails at Seattle's finest restaurants and eventually moved up to become a full-time bartender. She moved up through the ranks of bartender, then wine buyer and finally manager. She also worked for Noble Wines, LTD. and covered multiple sales routes and did merchandising. This is where she became familiar with Hedges wines. She eventually moved from Seattle to Brooklyn where she bartended and created the cocktails at many prestigious Manhattan restaurants, including Prune.
She made the decision to move back to Washington state, this time on the East side of the state, to be closer to family. After reaching out to an old friend who she worked with at Noble Wines, Karla found her way to Hedges Family Estate where she now manages hospitality at the Chateau and social media.

Born and raised in the Northern Suburbs of Chicago to third generation vegetable farmers, Wayne, at a young age, was introduced to the importance of food and knowing where it comes from. The constant exposure to fresh and varied produce sparked a love affair with cooking and all things food and beverage! After graduating from the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater with a degree in Finance, where he was also working as a chef at a local Farm-To-Table restaurant, Wayne set out to explore the culinary world farther. He dove head first into the world of specialty coffee, working as a barista before eventually managing the cafe. His immersion into specialty coffee would become the stepping stone to him truly developing a palate and appreciation for the nuance of craft beverages. Wanting to diversify his knowledge further, Wayne then accepted the managerial position at a small craft brewery near his hometown where he would continue to develop an understanding of taste and became absorbed by the world of fermentation. He began brewing his own kombucha, seeking out sourdough bakeries, and studying (and drinking) wine! The history, art, culture, language, and wonder of wine captivated him and he knew it was only a matter of time before he would have to make wine his full-time vocation. As luck would have it, Wayne received his first break in the world of wine while visiting family in Missoula, MT, when his incredibly supportive Uncle connected him with a local wine educator. After a 45 minute meeting at a local coffee shop and a few emails later Wayne was introduced to Sarah Goedhart, the Winemaker at Hedges Family Estate. Even though having no formal experience in winemaking, Sarah was empathetic to Wayne and offered him a 6 month Enology Internship. Having never heard of Red Mountain and being completely ignorant to the incredible people and company he was about to become apart of, Wayne packed up his silver Cobalt with as many flannels as could fit and headed West. And after completing his very first harvest he struck gold again when he was offered to stay on as Sarah’s assistant and the opportunity to study for his Viticulture Certificate through Washington State University.
In his spare time Wayne enjoys reading a slew of different books, cooking, listening to records, all things nature related, exploring craft breweries & coffee shops, working out, and talking about Rom-Coms with his little brother and sister (two of his 4 siblings).
